COUNSELING PRACTICE

My practice is located at 4901 Broadway, Ste. 100, in Alamo Heights, San Antonio, Texas.

The Counseling Experience

People attend counseling sessions for many reasons. Some people seek counseling while undergoing periods of loss, adjustment and transition, or during periods of deepened reflection and reorganization. Talking to a counselor can give you an opportunity to discuss important life events, reconsider your life path, or come to terms with difficult life experiences.

Much of my work has involved working with people suffering from grief and loss issues, like the death of a loved one, divorce, addiction, or other life-changing situations. It is not unusual for people in these circumstances to feel anxious, confused, isolated, or depressed.

At times, people attend counseling sessions because they feel stuck in their experiences. They may have an idea about what they want to do, but they may also have mixed or conflicting feelings about proceeding in that direction. Other times, people seek counseling to work through relationship issues, or because they feel stuck in a dead-end or unrewarding job. Perhaps they are close to finishing a goal, like college, or embarking on a new profession, but they carry fears or doubts that keep them from moving forward. Certainly, many people are influenced by self-defeating thought patterns and behaviors that limit their range of freedom to live the life they would like to live.

Common counseling issues include:

  • Relationships: Couples, Family, Parenting
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Personal Growth Enhancement and Life Direction
  • Self Esteem
  • Addictions
  • Negotiating Conflict
  • Divorce
  • Adjustment  (College, Career, Blended Families, Loss and Grief)
  • Working through issues of hurt, anger, rejection and betrayal
  • Intimacy and Commitment
  • Self and Other-forgiveness

In counseling, we often work on adjusting limiting beliefs or perceptions and creating new, more productive patterns of thought and action. Sometimes we do this by honoring our experiences, grieving our lost dreams, and creating opportunities for new, more productive ones. We may also do this by becoming more self-aware and more aware of other people’s perceptions and worldviews. By becoming self-aware, we are able to identify our gifts and use them to attract and enjoy life and the people we love. Self-awareness also helps us be more responsible in our relationships with others. Additionally, by learning more about how other people view the world, we are more able to negotiate our life experiences with the people we care about and share life with. The work you do in counseling can help you become more compassionate with yourself and others, communicate more effectively, and become more action-oriented.
